A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
