The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
