A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
This broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from transport usage to communication habits.
