Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
