Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
